Vaclav Smil is Distinguished Professor at the University of Manitoba and the author of over 30 books, most recently "Prime Movers of Globalization: The History and Impact of Diesel Engines and Gas Turbines". His interdisciplinary research encompasses energy, environment, food, population, economics, history and public policy studies. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and has lectured widely in North America, Europe and Asia.
