As Barnaby approaches the day in his own life on which his father died prematurely of a heart attack, intimations of mortality lead him to the prestigious Midsomer Health Farm. There the bizarre fads and fetishes of his eccentric fellow residents lead to a sequence of sudden deaths which finally persuade Barnaby that his own life must turn in a new direction.

Barnaby joins a trip to Brighton by wartime evacuees and the Causton Chamber of Commerce because he has reason to suspect corrupt dealings between the Mayor of Causton and the female Mayor of Brighton. But the civic visit is cut short when one of the party is de-capitated during a ride on the ghost train and it seems that death threats to the vicar of Midsomer Parva and members of his congregation are being executed - by the sword of a Norman conqueror.

July, 1916, Tommy Hicks suffering shell shock, walks away from a battle in which many of the Midsomer Yeomen died and keeps walking until he is found by an officer. He is sentenced to be shot by a firing squad. The soldiers fire above him and the young officer in charge, Duggie Hammond, has to shoot him with his pistol, igniting a feud between the Hammonds and the Hicks that has lasted for 90 years.
